Here are some examples of obsessions that people can have:
- Fear of losing control
- A common obsession in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), this can include a fear of blurting out obscenities, lashing out physically, or engaging in other violent or socially deviant acts.
- Intrusive thoughts
- These can be distressing thoughts of a violent or sexual nature, often deeply unsettling.
- Contamination
- This is one of the most commonly encountered obsessions in OCD, and can include a fear of dirt or germs, toxins, environmental hazards, or bodily wastes or secretions.
- Hoarding
- This can include challenges in parting with possessions, leading to clutter and accumulation. Hoarding is categorized as a symptom of both OCD and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder.
- Symmetry and order
- This can include the need to have everything lined up symmetrically just "right" to prevent discomfort or harm from occurring.
- Celebrity worship syndrome
- This can include developing a love obsession with somebody who you have no personal relation to. Love obsessional stalking accounts for roughly 20–25% of all stalking cases.
Other examples of obsessions include: Religious or moral obsessions, Body dysmorphic disorder, Scrupulosity, Relationship OCD (ROCD), and HOCD (homosexuality OCD).
